Taiwanese Face Mask - FaceQ It's Black Obsidian Brightening & Purifying

October 3, 2016 Danielle D'Ornellas

A few months ago, two good friends of mine went on a whirlwind trip to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. While they were traveling, they thought about poor little Danielle stuck in boring old Canada-land and came home with a VERY FUN surprise!

You guessed it, it was the face mask I'm wearing above, the FaceQ It's Black Obsidian Brightening & Purifying Face Mask. I got a whole BOX of these sheet masks to play with, so let's see how they stack up, shall we?

The Fit

The FaceQ It's Black Obsidian Brightening and Purifying Sheet Mask is a full-face sheet mask with a flap that goes below your chin and has little straps to hook up around and onto your ears. The first few times I tried this it was really weird to feel the moisture from the straps behidn my ears, but now I LOVE IT. It's so convenient to not have to worry about your mask falling off or having the serum not equally distributed across your face. By basically sticking to your face like a Halloween mask, this mask gives all-over coverage. Also, the eye/nose/mouth holes were perfect for my face so I didn't feel like it was suffocating me or leaving GIANT gaps like some other masks. Win!

The Formula

The first thing I wondered about this mask was "Why is it so black?" It's not a charcoal based mask (which are mostly the only other black masks I've seen) so I had to spend some time using Google Translate to figure out what exactly this mask was for. Turns out, it's very similar to charcoal. Obsidian is extract is supposed to help you battle the pollution and contaminants that are absorbed by the skin, while another ingredient helps brighten dull skin. I'm not sure I've tried anything like it before, but I can tell you I'm hooked.

My skin felt SUPER soothed while wearing this mask, which surprisingly has a fairly light scent, I could barely place it (the ingredients list does include calendula, licorice root extract and chamomille extract but it's very mild.) The next morning, my skin felt supple, refreshed and it was glowing, and I've felt this exact same result every time I've used it. I only have two masks left so I'm kinda savouring them until I can find some more!

The Verdict

Great fit, great formula, great results. 10/10 would buy this again! Now the only problem is whether I can actually FIND it again. Let me know in the comments if you've seen this mask anywhere outside of eBay, will you?

Looks like it's time for my monthly makeup! This time last year I was only two weeks post-eye surgery so I couldn't wear makeup at all and then all of ~ this ~ happened. I was going through my vanity recently, not that I've had to desire to wear stuff again, and discovered that SO many of my products had gone bad, and, of them, how many were things I had barely touched. I'm not heading to MINIMALISM or anything, but it has been a bit cathartic to throw out things and really take stock of things, whether it's makeup, or just anything else in life. The one thing I feel grateful for in the last time is more of this time to figure out what *I* actually want, even if it's not what I expected one year ago.
Took a half day yesterday and ended up at the lake. It wasn't too cold, but the skyline looked amazing. I'm still pretty sad these days, not gonna lie, but it felt nice to do something outside and I hope this weather sticks around so I can experience

Today was a holiday, it meant I didn't need to go to work, but when work is just a desk in your living room two feet from your couch, it still feels like you're always at work and never at work, and always waiting until you just turn the laptop back on. Days have no real meaning, time has no meaning, the monotony is just what it is now. Today wasn't a good day. I didn't have to do anything and I couldn't really do anything. Stuff felt pointless, hobbies felt pointless. Everything felt hard and yet I still had to force myself through it. Here's to basically just muddling through. Because we're all gonna have these days and to pretend you don't isn't helping anyone, even yourself.

I even threw on a dress and tights so at least I partially felt like we were really going out! ♥️ Not our most exciting anniversary, but definitely in the top ten 😉.

But it is still nice to see some sunshine, even if it's bouncing off of 1 Bloor East & blasting me in the face as I try to read! 😂☀️
