IT Cosmetics Superhero Liner & Mascara Review | Darling Magpie

August 10, 2018 Danielle D'Ornellas

These products were supplied for review but all opinions are my own.

When I was first getting into beauty and makeup, the one product I never really spent much time considering was mascara. I bought Maybelline Great Lash like EVERYONE ELSE DID and left it at that. For YEARS! (And I bet I had some of those mascaras FOR years, ew!) Eventually I realized that NOT ALL MASCARAS ARE THE SAME and my exploration into other brands began! Today's test? IT Cosmetics Supehero Mascara and as a bonus, the Superhero Liner. Will these two products save the day?

Sleek, superhero-like tube!

Sleek, superhero-like tube!

Confession time: I have very fine, short-ish length lashes, they're not invisible or crazy stubby, but they aren't very voluminous either. And when I was younger I didn't really use mascara that much because I couldn't be bothered to find a good type, I would literally do my eyes and just SKIP the mascara, which I REALLY shouldn't since I barely had any lashes to start with!

Now I'm more invested in my lashes and find I'm usually attracted to plastic bristle mascaras, like L'Oreal Feline Mascara, Lancome's Grandiose Mascara or, if we're getting fancy, YSL's Babydoll Mascara. I think I like them because they are easier to work with than straight brushes, and don't deposit too much product on my thin lashes and weigh them down. But IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara swooped down to bring me back to the bristly side.

IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara

Type: Straight brush wand | Price: $32 CAD/ $24 USD

The Formula: Now, it's a VERY WET MASCARA. I know some people don't like this but hear me out, it's wet but I don't need to apply too many coats because it separates and lifts fairly easily, I only need to do a tiny touch up to make sure all the lashes are covered. It does take a minute or so to dry but I found my lashes stood out SO MUCH with only one full coat and a touch up. The wait is worth it. For a bigger look I'll add a few extra coats but for a regular day, one coat-ish is more than enough.

Mascara on the left, nothing on the right.

Mascara on the left, nothing on the right.

The Wear: Now this is where it gets crazy. THIS MASCARA DOES NOT MOVE. It does not break down, or flake, or smudge. Once it's set, it STAYS. I've been wearing this stuff through HIGH hot summer and have been putting it through the paces. It's been a scorcher in Toronto and I've worn it biking in the heat, I've worn it to dance nights, I've worn it to outdoor concerts, I've worn it for 12+ hours and it stays!! While it's not waterproof, I can have an allergy sneezing fit or get mildly soaked with sweat and still rely that this mascara is not going to fail me. Will it pass a cry test? No. But any mascara that can handle my allergies, is a star in my book.

The Verdict: I might buy this again? I currently have more mascara than I do arms and legs, but it's extremely reliable, looks great, and is the high quality I expect of IT Cosmetics.

IT Cosmetics Superhero Liner

Type: Not-quite-felt-tip-gel? | Price: $32 CAD/ $24 USD

I have to say, as much as I really like this liner, it baffles me. The description of the pen is that it's not a typical felt liner, "unlike typical felt-tip liners, this luxurious brush hair won't fray and applies your liner with effortless precision." But is it just a FANCIER felt tip? It FEELS like a felt tip, a good one, but it still feels like felt and not like a super thin brush or hair.

After only a few strokes, it was a glorious matte black.

After only a few strokes, it was a glorious matte black.

The Formula: When it comes to eyeliners, I'm very flexible with what I use. I definitely have my favourites but I use a variety of types. Gel, liquid, felt tip, brush, etc. But when it comes to a solid black eyeliner, I want it to be liquid, and I want it to be saturated but not too wet so I can confidently draw a wing, a swoop or whatever my heart desires, quickly and painlessly. So colour me impressed whenI only had to shake up IT Cosmetics Superhero Liner once or twice to deposit the perfect amount of product for both eyes. It does dry fast but it also deposits colour so easily that you won't and shouldn't need to spend too much time fusssing with it.

The Wear: I tested this liner on my hands before I made a look with it, and it DID. NOT. BUDGE. I couldn't wipe it off with my fingers or water at all. Only micellar water did the trick. But on the plus side, it came off neatly with micellar water or an oil-based remover, so it's not one of those stubborn liners that require too much force to take off. I've been extremely impressed with this liner because I suffer from terrible summer allergies that cause me to tear up and most liners tend to dissolve or smudge, but this one stays! Even if I'm an allergic mess, my liner looks great!

The Verdict: I'd definitely buy this again. My other favourite eyeliner is my Lancome Grandiose which is about the same price, and I've recently chucked a bunch of under-performing drug store liners. I'd MUCH rather have something I can use easily and rely on.

A summery, pink look I made with the mascara and the liner!

Looks like it's time for my monthly makeup! This time last year I was only two weeks post-eye surgery so I couldn't wear makeup at all and then all of ~ this ~ happened. I was going through my vanity recently, not that I've had to desire to wear stuff again, and discovered that SO many of my products had gone bad, and, of them, how many were things I had barely touched. I'm not heading to MINIMALISM or anything, but it has been a bit cathartic to throw out things and really take stock of things, whether it's makeup, or just anything else in life. The one thing I feel grateful for in the last time is more of this time to figure out what *I* actually want, even if it's not what I expected one year ago.
Took a half day yesterday and ended up at the lake. It wasn't too cold, but the skyline looked amazing. I'm still pretty sad these days, not gonna lie, but it felt nice to do something outside and I hope this weather sticks around so I can experience

Today was a holiday, it meant I didn't need to go to work, but when work is just a desk in your living room two feet from your couch, it still feels like you're always at work and never at work, and always waiting until you just turn the laptop back on. Days have no real meaning, time has no meaning, the monotony is just what it is now. Today wasn't a good day. I didn't have to do anything and I couldn't really do anything. Stuff felt pointless, hobbies felt pointless. Everything felt hard and yet I still had to force myself through it. Here's to basically just muddling through. Because we're all gonna have these days and to pretend you don't isn't helping anyone, even yourself.

I even threw on a dress and tights so at least I partially felt like we were really going out! ♥️ Not our most exciting anniversary, but definitely in the top ten 😉.
